Brother Curtis Cravens is a native to Fentress County and attended York Institute. He was raised in a Christian home, but even with such a great Christian heritage and upbringing, he was not saved until he was 18 years old.  Brother Curtis surrendered to the call to preach not long after that at the age of 21. He was a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church, and was ordained by Pastor Harold Slaven. He served as assistant pastor at Morning Star Baptist, and traveled as an Evangelist. In 2008, God begin to deal with him about doing something he never dreamed he would do, start a church. In 2009, Canaan Independent Baptist Church was organized with just 16 people. Our first meeting was held in a small cabin in the western part of the county, but as we grew, the need for a larger meeting place became necessary. After much prayer and seeking God’s direction, the land, labor, and much of the material was given to us to build at our present location on the Frank Campbell Road. Since then the Lord has truly blessed our Church with numerical and spiritual growth, and the burden that God gave Brother Curtis has prospered by the hand of the Lord as we are now going through our third building program. Brother Curtis seeks to Rightly Divide the Scriptures, Reach Sinners, and Raise the Standard of the old-time way. Pictured here along with Brother Curtis is his family. Wife: Cindy, son: Carson.
